I Didn’t Know I Was Me

“Man, sometimes it takes you a long time to sound like yourself.” -Miles Davis

Let’s Go 2 Work.

If only, somebody told me, maybe I would’ve faced life more boldly, and perhaps tasted a smidgen of glory.

But who from the outside, can tell you what’s inside? It is only this guy, who knows the story.

If I knew I was me…

I would’ve had more peace, more joy, more pride.

As a matter of fact, for damn sho’, I wouldn’t have let so much shit slide.

No lie, I really would’ve tried. And word 2 my mother, I would’ve been a brighter color, instead of always trying to hide.

I would’ve had more faith. I would’ve taken more risks.

I would’ve asked her to dance. I would’ve shared all my gifts.

I would’ve said no, when I reluctantly said yes. And I definitely would not have stayed, when I knew I should’ve left.

I swear I didn’t know, I swear I didn’t see.

Because if I did, I would’ve cared LESS about what you said, and MORE about what I said…about me.

If I knew… I never would’ve gave up, I’d double down on what worked and what didn’t, I would’ve changed up,

I would’ve stayed down till I came up, yelling, “Hard work boy this ain’t luck!”

I could’ve had it all, I could’ve been free,

I truly could’ve been great,

If only I knew,

I was me.
