I start this article by paraphrasing part of a conversation from the movie "Kill Bill: Vol 2."
What makes Superman different from other heroes is that he was born Superman. Clark Kent is his alter ego which is his view of the world around him.
In the context of this scene, Clark is referenced as being weak, void of confidence, and lacking that "thing" which would attract ladies. I would agree that all this is true. Especially in comparison to Superman. Allow me to offer another prospective though.
Consider this: If Superman is the embodiment of your purpose fulfilled then what does that make Clark Kent?
Showing the world that you’re Superman means showing off peak you. That particular skill that you offer to the masses that no other can match. When this power is first realized, its hard not to display it. And why would you? It's amazing! It's undeniable! It's this power that displays you in your highest form! But does everyone deserve to see it?
Here is where Clark comes in...
If Superman is the finished product, Clark Kent is the work. The mask of Clark Kent represents the countless hours in the gym. The long nights of workshopping new ideas. The numerous days of discipline with diet. The months, and maybe years, spent denying the flesh. Clark Kent is you building up your strength, discipline, and humility for the moment when Superman must arise.
As long as I could remember, I wanted to be a professional music artist. There is a lot that goes into making this dream a reality. The one thing that I learned through my trials was where I was undeniable at… performance. On that stage, everything came together. On there, I was Superman. Ask anyone who has seen me perform and they will tell you that it’s a natural fit. It's like I belonged there. What those people may not understand is all the work that was put in prior to the performance. Writing songs, recording sessions, performing in front of many bathroom mirrors, all the rehearsals scheduled just to put on a show that people would enjoy.
So, once you have realized what your purpose is, don't overlook the work. Don't overlook the time needed to become better. Don't overlook the discomfort experienced to fulfill your purpose.
Don't overlook Clark Kent.
Because while the world may overlook all that you are building up to, they will be in awe once you pop out as Superman.
